Frequently asked questions

Where does product data come from?

Product names, photos, and ingredient lists come from Open Food Facts, the open worldwide food-product database. Ingredient verdicts (haram, mushbooh, halal) are produced on your device from HalalScan's built-in ingredient database.

Does the app need internet?

Looking up a product by barcode needs internet to reach Open Food Facts. Everything else — ingredient analysis, photo OCR of ingredients labels, verdicts, your scan history, and settings — works fully offline on your device.

Does "no haram detected" mean the product is certified halal?

No. It means none of our haram or mushbooh keywords were found in the listed ingredients. That is not proof of halal certification. When in doubt, consult a scholar you trust.

How do I change my madhab or language?

Tap the gear icon at the top of the home screen, then choose your madhab (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, or Hanbali) and your language (English, العربية, or Français).

How do I delete my scan history?

On the home screen, under "Recent scans", tap "Clear". This removes all saved scans from your device.

Is my data collected or shared?

No. HalalScan collects no personal data — no accounts, no analytics, no advertising. See the Privacy Policy below for the one network request the app makes (product lookups).

Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 6, 2026

Data we collect

None. HalalScan does not collect, transmit, or share any personal information. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising frameworks, and no tracking of any kind.

Product lookups

When you scan or enter a barcode, the app sends the barcode number to Open Food Facts (world.openfoodfacts.org) to retrieve public product information (name, photo, ingredients). No personal information is included in these requests. Photo OCR of ingredients labels is performed entirely on your device using Apple's Vision framework — those photos never leave your phone.

Data stored on your device

Your scan history, language choice, and madhab preference are stored only in your iPhone's local on-device storage. They never leave your device and are deleted if you delete the app.

Third parties

The only third party the app communicates with is Open Food Facts, solely to look up product data as described above. The app contains no third-party SDKs.

Children's privacy

The app collects no information from anyone, including children.
